"For more than 50 years, he channeled his inner visions to messages of hope and healing," Obama said. "Thanks to Stevie, all of us have been moved to higher ground."

After the ceremony, Stevie told reporters: I feel truly honored to receive this wonderful Medal of Freedom. My receiving it is saying to me, by the president, be forever committed to this that you’ve started, continue to try your best to encourage people to reach higher ground. But it is also a statement to me that says this is something that you’re wearing that says you’re committed for the rest of your life to fighting for the freedom of other people—freedom where race is not an issue, where everyone is respected as a family. The freedom of accessibility for those who have disabilities, that there’s nowhere in the world that they can’t be able to go and have a way of it being accessible for them. Freedom for health care, I feel that we need to have health care in this country. We have to have education. There’s no reason for illiteracy anywhere in this country or in the world. So anything that people are not free to be able to do and be appreciated and recognized, to think that in 2014 that we still have a condition where a person’s color is treated with disrespect and not being honored. We’re all made from the same creator. - Watch video of Stevie being presented with award here.

You write songs like 'If It's Magic' because you say, 'What is the most magical thing in the world?' And the most magical thing I see in the world is love. Paul Williams, president and chairman of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, said the awards were "a once-in-a-lifetime honor that would not be conferred again for another century." Because you know we've mattered long before it was said, but the way we show that we matter, the way that we show all the various people of color matter is by loving each other and doing something about it. Not just talking about it, not just waiting to see the media and press come when there's a horrible thing. The first thing you must do is stop believing the fallacy of you not being important. Because it is completely unacceptable for one to hate themselves so much that anyone that looks like you, you want to kill." Several hundred people attended the conference, which focused on violence on city streets and also included an appearance by civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis. After speaking, Wonder closed the event by performing his hits "Love's in Need of Love Today" and "Higher Ground." [18] Stevie penned a tribute to Sylvia Moy in a letter to Rolling Stone. In it he wrote: How do you stop loving the ones you loved for a lifetime – you don't! Sylvia Moy has made it possible to enrich my world of songs with some of the greatest lyrics. But, not only that, she, through her participation and our co-writing those songs, helped me become a far better writer of lyrics.

Even in these later years, I longed for us to collaborate again, yet who am I to fight with the Most High in His decision to making her one of his angels of song for eternity. Maybe someday in eternity, at its given time and space, we will write together again. I love you, Sylvia.
